Drivers stopped to pick up banknotes after an armored truck dumped enormous wads of cash on a California motorway on Friday.
However, motorists seeking to make a quick buck before Thanksgiving were stopped as police cracked down and detained two people.
“There’s a lot of video evidence of people stealing the cash from the freeway, picking it up,” Sgt. Curtis Martin of the California Highway Patrol told a press conference.
He stated that the money, which is in various denominations and amounts to thousands of dollars, belongs to a bank and must be surrendered to a police station.
After the guarded truck’s door flew open near San Diego on Interstate-5, which stretches from California’s Mexican border to Canada, the interstate free-for-all began.
People racing around the road, scooping up cash and even flinging handfuls of greenbacks into the air in celebration were captured on video and shared on social media.
“Have you ever seen this before?! What would you do?!” posted @demibagby on Instagram.
However, authorities have warned that anyone who does not hand over the money quickly would be tracked down using the same cameras.
“It’s better for them to do the honesty policy than to wait for us to track them down and knock on their door,” said Martin.
A man and woman who had joined the dash for cash were arrested after they mistakenly locked themselves out of their car, obstructing a lane and rendering themselves unable to leave the area.
